Maxwell Alcott or Alcott Maxwell is supposedly an engineer formerly in the oil industry, now a jewelry and diamond dealer. Pretends that he has several accounts with millions in them - including in Europe - which, however, have to be activated for money.

Due to an accident or adverse circumstances, he now has no money to activate the accounts.
